because i am so interested in photography (though i'm not a photographer by any means), i spend a lot of time looking to other photographers for inspiration. it honestly doesn't take very much to impress me. art is one of those things that is so incredibly subjective and personal that it's difficult to not like what another person is trying to portray, as long as it's real.

anyways, my most recent find is the photography of helmut newton. well, he's not really a find seeing as he was probably one of the most famous photographers of the 20th century... but his urban-erotic style is really intriguing to me. and, as far as i'm concerned, anyone with the ability to somehow combine erotica and nudity with raw society deserves a nod coming from my direction.


i love the small details he creates in his photography. the hands being held behind their backs really makes this photo for me.

every year, the edge (aka the only radio station i ever bother listening to) hosts their own awards show, the casby's. because it's always been a 19+ event, i was never able to go. this year, i won tickets.. so randomly. and now, i'm stuck in ottawa when i could be partying with fucking alexisonfire and the stills and every band i've ever loved :(.

i am oddly intrigued by irving penn.

i haven't decided why, but there's a quality about all (or almost all) of his photographs that i've seen that is just really appealing. he's probably one of the most influential photographers of our time, especially in portraiture. anyways, i like the depth he creates, he's interesting.

last night, the Silversun Pickups came to Ottawa for the first time, ever. needless to say, it was INCREDIBLE IN EVERY POSSIBLE WAY. seriously, it was one of the best. words can't even begin to describe how good last night was and how much i am currently in love with the silversun pickups.

this song has been in my head and on my lips for the past 24 hours.


opening bands were An Horse and Cage the Elephant. i had never really listened to either band before last night and i was really impressed with how good they were. Cage the Elephant really surprised me. i had only heard their song "ain't no rest for the wicked" and assumed all their work would have that same sound. WRONG. Who knew they were so intense?
Me and Alyssa ended up meeting them after the show, very cool guys.

i think that fall is the most underrated season.

so, friday night sam and i hosted the GREATEST THANKSGIVING PARTY IN EXISTENCE. it was epic. i was probably way too drunk to be taking photos, so don't judge.

They're baaaaack.

I finally overcame my reluctancy in buying the latest album by The Used, Artwork... and i'm so glad i did. After the release of their third album Lies for the Liars, i pretty much gave up on this band. But Artwork reallly brings them back to their former glory. I would prefer a bit more of the old screamo vibe that they had in their first album, but still.. it's a solid comeback for The Used. It's amazing that after almost a decade theyre is still able to make music that is just incredible.

I highly suggest that everyone who stopped listening to The Used after like grade 9 (we all did) start listening to them again!

It's a sad, sad week for music.
A few days ago indie rock band Chiodos announced on their Myspace that they have let their lead singer go.
Craig Owens was not just any lead singer/screamer of a no-name rock band. Anyone who has heard Chidos can identify with their unique sound that is created largely by his vocals. Though the band promises this separation was completely necessary (for reasons they refuse to share), and that they will be releasing new music that will not disappoint in the near future... i am hard-pressed to believe them.

I saw Chiodos for the first time almost 4 years back when they opened for Taking Back Sunday. I had never heard of them before and by the end of their set I was completely in love with their sound. Their last show together was part of the Vans Warped Tour set on August 23 in L.A. Luckily I was able to see them this summer at the Toronto show.

This is seriously one of the best bands I've seen live, it's a real shame that they had to separate.
